Democratic presidential candidate for November election, Joe Biden, has pledged to provide free covid-19 vaccine to all US citizens if he succeeds in winning.
"Once we have a safe and effective vaccine, it has to be free to everyone -- whether or not you're insured," Xinhua news agency quoted Biden as saying during a speech in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday.
He also slammed President Donald Trump for his response to the covid-19 pandemic which has claimed hundreds of thousand Americans' lives.
“President Trump said we’re rounding the corner, it’s going away, we’re learning to live with it. They are quotes. But as I told him last night, we’re not learning to live with it. We’re learning to die with it. This is a dark winter ahead,” Biden, 77, said.
He said that Trump has given up on the pandemic and is now looking forward to "quit America".
Biden further added that every citizen of the United States will be provided with free vaccination process whether or not people trust him.
“Once we have a safe and effective vaccine, it has to be free to everyone, whether or not you’re insured,” the former vice president said.
"Covid-19 dwarfs anything that we've faced in recent history, and it isn't showing any signs of slowing down," said Biden, adding that the virus, which has now killed more than 223,000 people nationwide, "is surging in almost every state".
"We're more than eight months into this crisis and the president still doesn't have a plan," said the former vice president.
Talking about his strategy for vaccine distribution, Biden said that he would position the country to finally get ahead of this virus and get back the lives. He said that he will ask the new Congress to put a bill on his desk by January end to re evalutae the public health sector. He said he would also mandate wearing masks and urge governors to ensure that covid-19 guidelines are being followed in their states.
“And if they refuse, I’ll go to the mayors and county executives and get local masking requirements in place nationwide,” he said, adding that as president he will mandate mask-wearing at all federal buildings and all interstate transportation.
Biden's remarks on Friday came as the US registered its record daily coronavirus cases, crossing 80,000 mark for the first time. Besides US, India is the only country to cross over 80,000 cases in a single day.
