US House Democrats elected Hakeem Jeffries as the first Black party leader

Democratic members of the US House of Representatives have elected Hakeem Jeffries as their leader. He has become the first African American to get this position. He will replace Nancy Pelosi and will assume office when the new Congress begins on January 3. Earlier, the Speaker of the US Parliament, Nancy Pelosi had announced her resignation from the leadership of the Democratic Party.

His appointment, following Wednesday’s unanimous vote, was historic, as never before had a black politician been elected party leader in the US Congress. The way was cleared for Jeffries after Pelosi announced she was ending her leadership after nearly two decades of service.

Announcing her withdrawal from the leadership of the Democratic Party, Pelosi had said, “I want to give a chance to the young leaders of the Democratic Party. I will not support any claimant. All claimants will have their own plan, their own vision.” At the same time, after being elected the leader of the Democratic, Hakeem Jeffries said that he would find a way to work with the Republicans. He said that he will not back down whenever necessary against extremism.

Pelosi is the first woman to become speaker

Jeffries will replace current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the California representative and head of the Democratic caucus. Pelosi is the first woman in American history to hold this role. Representing California’s 12th District in the San Francisco Bay Area, Pelosi has served as the leader of the House Democrats for nearly 20 years.

Hakim Jeffries praised Pelosi fiercely in his speech. Jeffries described Pelosi as an extraordinary speaker. Praising Pelosi, Jeffries said that she has given so much for so many people at such an important time. During her tenure, she remained one of the most powerful political figures in the country. He is known as a capable and skilled politician.

Who is Hakeem Jeffries?

Hakeem Jeffries, 53, was once considered the party’s rising star. Now he has become the first black person to become the party leader. Jeffries was first elected to Congress in 2012. He gradually rose his ranks and became the chairman of the Democratic Caucus in 2019. Before joining politics, he was a corporate lawyer and has served in the New York State Legislature.

Earlier in American history, no black had led any house of Congress. He said his goal is to raise the standard of living of Americans and get the job done. Jeffries has replaced Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi was elected as the leader of the party in 2003. Earlier this month, Pelosi announced that she would be retiring from office but would remain a member of the House.
