UNGA: The United Nations General Assembly in New York turned into an unlikely stage for direct confrontation this week, as US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian traded warnings and rebukes from the same podium, just a day apart, while their countries remain locked in a war now stretching close to seven months.

Trump’s Warning: “Annihilate” Iran If Talks Fail
Speaking on September 22, Trump told world leaders that Iran could face destruction if a negotiated settlement does not materialize soon. He suggested the United States was weighing whether to “annihilate” the Islamic Republic, a remark that drew immediate global attention given Iran was, for the first time, addressing the same forum while actively at war with the host nation.
Despite the harsh language, Trump also signaled that diplomacy had not been abandoned. He pointed to ongoing back-channel efforts led by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, describing recent engagement as a step toward a possible deal.
Pezeshkian’s Response: Defiance Mixed With an Offer to Talk
Pezeshkian took the podium the next day, delivering what several outlets described as a rare wartime address, the first time a leader has spoken at the UNGA while at war with the country hosting the assembly. He rejected Trump’s framing outright.
“We will not bow our head and give up the right that is inherently ours,” Pezeshkian said, adding that Iran had been the target, not the source, of aggression in the conflict.
Why the War Escalated in the First Place
UNGA: The current conflict traces back to a 12-day Israel-Iran war earlier this year, which saw US and Israeli strikes kill several of Iran‘s top military and political leaders, including Khamenei. A brief diplomatic opening followed in mid-year, when Trump and Pezeshkian remotely signed a memorandum extending a ceasefire for further negotiations, but that arrangement did not hold, and hostilities resumed.
