As of now, the US has changed its travel advice for India and is now recommending "increased caution" for Americans planning to visit the country. This new alert from the US State Department focuses on safety concerns for women traveling alone and tells them to avoid going on trips by themselves because they are more likely to be harassed or sexually assaulted.

The department says in its warning, "Indian police say rape is one of the crimes that is growing the fastest in India." There has been violent crime, like sexual attack, at tourist spots and other places.

The message from June 19, 2025, tells visitors to pay attention to their surroundings and follow normal safety rules.

Risks Named: Hate crimes and terrorism

The State Department's Level 2 alert, which means "Exercise Increased Caution," says that the main reasons for the change are crime and terrorists. The advisory doesn't name a specific threat that is still going on, but it does stress that everyone should be more aware, especially in places with a lot of people or popular tourist spots.

Millions of people from around the world visit India every year because it is known for its rich culture and wide range of activities. But the warning is a good reminder that there are still risks, especially in cities, like theft, assault, and even terror threats.

How the Travel Advisory System Works

The US has a method for giving travel advice that goes from Level 1 (Use Normal Cautions) to Level 4 (Do Not Travel). A Level 2 alert doesn't say that people can't travel, but it does tell them to be careful and take steps to stay safe. India has been at Level 2 for a while now, but the increased focus on crimes against women is a big change.

Extra Safety Measures US citizens who are in India or who are planning to visit are urged to: Sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

  • Stay in touch with the US office or consulate that is closest to you.

  • Womenshould especially not walk alone at night.

  • Use local news outlets and government travel websites to stay up to date.

Travelers are also told to carry copies of important papers, hide expensive jewelry, and be careful when using public transportation, according to the warning.

As travel around the world picks up again after the pandemic, these kinds of warnings are very important for planning trips that are safe and well-informed.
