Yet another shooting has occurred in the United States, etching into the memory of the public a reminder of the perpetual gun violence that plagues the country. A rooftop shooter killed at least 6 people and injured at least 24 more at a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois.
A morning of joy and celebration turned sour quickly for this Chicago suburb when dozens of bullets were fired from a rooftop, causing chaos and confusion in the streets amind screams. Shocking videos have emerged from people who captured the scene.
The clips are extremely disturbing, one of which captured the exact moment the gunman started firing, as people began to scream and flee for their lives, teens on bicycles confused as to what was happening.
After a manhunt lasting hours, a ‘person of interest’—Robert E Crimo III—was held by the police. He was reportedly spotted by a North Chicago officer, trying to initiate a traffic stop.
Miles Zaremski, a Highland Park resident, said he was walking to the parade when he heard a “pop.”
Another video caught the confusion among onlookers. There were scores of people out on the streets to mark the July 4 holiday. One man is accompanied by a toddler.
Shootings in the US are becoming alarmingly normal. Two shootings very recently, in May, caught global attention—a school shooting in Texas in which 21 were shot dead, and one from a grocery store in New York that claimed 10 lives.
