Kenya: At least 48 people have died in one of Kenya’s worst road accidents. Videos and images shared by local broadcasters showed several wrecked cars, bikes, trucks and minibuses in Londiani in western Kenya.

Local police chief Tom Odeno said 48 people died in the Friday crash.

Eyewitnesses told local media that the accident happened after a lorry carrying a container veered off the road and crashed into several vehicles.

Peter Otieno narrowly escaped the road crash. He told the media that he saw the incoming trailer. Fearing the vehicle would hit his car, Odieno swerved and “escaped hitting him head-on.” The driver behind Odieno thought the latter was stopping to buy something and therefore continue driving. This driver hit the trailer, which veered off the road and hit bikes. cars and other vehicles.

Otieno said he saw 20 people dead with his own eyes. There were more dead bodies under the vehicle, according to Otieno.

The Kenya Red Cross said that 20 casualties were taken to various hospitals.

“Thirty injured”

Al- Jazeera quoted local police commander Geoffrey Mayek as saying that 48 people have died and one or two bodies might be trapped under the truck.

The accident happened between Kericho and Nakuru in western Kenya.

Mayek also said, “Thirty people have been seriously injured and rushed to various hospitals. The numbers could be more but as of now we are sure about 30.”

The police chief also said, “We are suspecting a truck which was being driven … towards Kericho lost control and rammed into matatus [local minibuses] …running over those matatus and injuring passengers and pedestrians who were standing by the bus stop.”

“My heart is crushed”

Kericho’s governor Erick Miutai wrote on Facebook that his heart was crushed after this accident. He also wrote, “It is dark moment for the people of Kericho. My heart goes out to the families who have just lost their loved ones.”
