Why meet Army chief through back door: ISI chief

Once again the opposition party in Pakistan is going to take to the streets against the Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government and former Prime Minister Imran Khan is going to march from Lahore to Islamabad today (October 28).

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI chief Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum has made serious allegations against Imran Khan by holding a press conference. The press conference has come at a time when various allegations are being made in the country regarding the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya. Indirect allegations are also being made against the armed forces.Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI chief Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum said that amidst the political turmoil, the then government made an “attractive offer” to Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in March. Making this claim, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen Anjum indirectly targeted former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the press conference. Lt Gen Anjum told reporters that I know that you are surprised by my presence.

General Bajwa retiring next month

Without naming former prime minister Khan, the ISI chief said, “In March, Gen Bajwa was given a ‘lucrative offer’ for an indefinite extension in his tenure.” It was made before me. He (General Bajwa) rejected it, as he wanted the institution to move from a controversial role to a constitutional role.

General Bajwa got an extension of three years and he is going to retire next month. This is the first media interaction by an ISI chief in the history of Pakistan.

Lt Gen Anjum said, “As the head of this agency (ISI), I cannot remain silent when they are targeted for no reason.”

“When needed, I will bring those facts to the fore,” he said. He said the officers, including the Quetta Corps commander killed in a helicopter crash in Balochistan’s Lasbela area, were mocked. He said there was “a lot of pressure” in March, but the organization and army chief General Bajwa decided to limit the army to its constitutional role.”

The ISI chief said the army chief was called a traitor and his family was also targeted. He asked, ‘If you see him as a traitor, why do you meet him through the back door?’ In a veiled attack on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said, “You meet him quietly at night and express your unconstitutional wishes, but call (the army chief) a traitor in broad daylight. This is a big contradiction between your words and your actions.”

PTI refutes ISI chief’s allegations

Meanwhile, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) dismissed the ISI chief’s allegations, saying the former prime minister never made any unconstitutional demand during the talks. PTI leader Asad Umar told a press conference that the matters discussed behind closed doors were not a “secret”, as Imran Khan had discussed them in rallies and press conferences.

Now Imran Khan in preparation for big march

Major preparations have been made in Lahore for the march of PTI from Lahore to Islamabad. Roads are lined with banners and a special container was prepared for the march. Imran’s march is also discussed in the newspapers. This march was announced by Imran Khan on Wednesday itself. Imran had said that he himself will join this march and raise his voice against the government, because this government is not allowing the people to vote.

Imran Khan, who has lost his chair in Pakistan, is trying day and night how he will get his chair back. Imran, who dreamed of a coup, is repeatedly marching against the government. Imran is once again preparing to take out a march against the government and great preparations have been made for this journey from Lahore to Islamabad.
