As World Environment Day 2025 draws near, our planet is calling for urgent action to combat plastic pollution. Together, however, we can protect Earth’s future, one small step at a time!
Why do we celebrate World Environment Day?
World Environment Day 2025 is celebrated on June 5 in order to raise awareness and take action for the protection of the environment. Celebrated since 1972, by the United Nations, this day brings together over 150 countries to blend and inspire government, community, and individual actions to confront immediate environmental issues - including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. World Environment Day is a global reminder that each action counts towards protecting our planet's future.
Theme, History, & Importance
The theme for 2025, "Beat Plastic Pollution," emphasizes the need to take urgent action to eliminate plastic waste and its threats to ecosystems and human health worldwide. The Republic of Korea is hosting this year's campaign that will ask for action to be taken at home and around the world. World Environment Day started in 1973 shortly after the Stockholm Conference to grow into the largest outreach platform in the world for the environment that drives action, awareness, and policy change around the world year after year.
“Plastic pollution is everywhere on the planet—even in our bodies, in the form of microplastics. World Environment Day 2025 is calling for collective action for the fight against plastic pollution.” — UNEP
