World Wetland Day Is Observed on 2 February

World Wetland Day is observed all over the world on 2 February. The special thing is that ‘World Wetland Day’ is organized to raise global awareness about the important role of Wetland for the people and our planet.

Wetland means a wet or marshy area or a water-saturated area. That is, wetlands or marshy land areas are called wetlands. In many places, the land is filled with water throughout the year. Wetland soil is part of the shore of lake, river and pond. A wetland is an area that is partially or completely filled with water throughout the year. Wetland has many benefits. Wetland in India extends from the cold and dry regions to the tropical monsoon regions of central India and the humid regions of the south. Let me tell you that Wetland makes water free from pollution.

Natural biodiversity is important for survival. They provide suitable habitat for the endangered and rare species of birds and animals, plants and insects. The wetlands are also shelters for winter birds and various animals.

Why is this day celebrated on 2 February only?

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February 1971 in Iran’s city of Ramsar to mark the Convention on the Protection of Wetlands on 2 February 1971 off the coast of the Caspian Sea.
