The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting amid Russia’s declaration of two Ukrainian cities as independent and orders to send troops. In this, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said that the increasing tension on Ukraine’s border with the Russian Federation is a matter of deep concern. These developments will disturb the peace and security of the region. He said that more than 20,000 Indian students and citizens are living in different parts of Ukraine. The safety of Indians is our priority. He said that India insists on both sides to exercise restraint and intensify diplomatic efforts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized the two cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, separated from eastern Ukraine, as independent. He announced this in his address to the nation on Monday. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his address, described Ukraine as a colony of America and said that the rule of Ukraine is a ‘puppet’ in the hands of America. Putin made the announcement after a meeting of the President’s Security Council, paving the way for Russia to send military forces and weapons to the conflict between Moscow-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces.
