Bollywood and Assamese music fans are mourning the sudden loss of singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically drowned in Singapore on September 19, just before his scheduled performance at the North East Festival. The Ya Ali singer was largely popular for his philanthropic contributions. Garg’s death has left a deep void in the music community.

Zubeen Garg Drowned After Suffering From Seizure

His wife (Garima Saikia Garg) confirmed the incident and shared that Zubeen had suffered seizure attacks in the past. She clarified that he did not die while scuba diving, as some rumours suggested, and mentioned that drummer Shekhar and Sidhartha were present on the yacht at the time.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma added that Zubeen had removed his life jacket before going for a swim for the second time, during which he suffered a seizure and drowned. The 52-year-old singer passed away at Singapore General Hospital ICU at 2:30 PM local time.

Expert Shares Symptoms Of Seizures

Dr Aditya Gupta (Director of Neurosurgery & Cyberknife at Artemis Hospital) told financialexpress.com that seizures can show several signs, including “sudden stiffening or jerking of body parts, lost awareness, confusion, staring spells, abnormal sensations like tingling, loss of bladder control, or loss of consciousness. Afterwards, an individual may feel tired, confused, or have a headache.”

While the exact type of seizure Zubeen experienced is not confirmed, Dr Gupta explained that the kind of seizure can often be identified by observing behaviour before or during the episode. He added that doctors usually rely on “medical history, possible triggers, and testing such as EEG and brain imaging” to determine the seizure type.

How To Reduce The Risk Of Seizures

As per Healthline, preventing seizures involves medical care, lifestyle adjustments, and safety measures. While not all seizures are preventable, especially in epilepsy, certain strategies can help manage triggers and lower risks:

Take Medications Consistently – Following the prescribed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) regimen is vital. Irregular intake can increase seizure risk.

Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule – Lack of sleep is a common trigger. A consistent routine ensures adequate rest and supports brain health.

Manage Stress – Stress can trigger seizures. Techniques like yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and regular exercise help reduce stress.

Avoid Alcohol and Drugs – These substances can lower the seizure threshold and interfere with control.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated – A balanced diet and regular meals help prevent low blood sugar, which may trigger seizures.

Ensure Home Safety – Padding furniture edges, securing heavy objects, and using non-slip mats reduce injury risk during a seizure. Protective headgear may also be considered.

Identify and Avoid Triggers – Keeping a seizure diary can help recognise triggers like certain foods, lights, or activities and allow for effective avoidance.

Integrating these strategies into daily life, along with consulting healthcare professionals, can help individuals manage seizure risks more effectively.

Meanwhile, the last rites of Zubeen Garg will be held in Guwahati, Assam. His mortal remains were brought back from Singapore on Sunday (September 21, 2025) for public viewing. Fans can pay homage at Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati today till 7:00 pm.
