Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, citing former Union Minister P Chidambaram’s recent remarks about India’s response to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks (26/11). Speaking during the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday, PM Modi accused the then Congress-led government of bowing to international pressure and sending a message of “weakness” instead of strength in the face of terrorism.
PM Modi Targets Congress Over 26/11 Response, Cites P Chidambaram’s Remarks
PM Modi said, “Mumbai — the economic capital of India — was attacked, but the government of that time showed a message of helplessness, weakness, and surrender before terrorism.”
India no longer remains silent against terrorism
Chidambaram, who was India’s Home Minister after the 26/11 attacks, had recently admitted in an interview that while he was in favour of retaliatory military action against Pakistan, the government chose restraint following global pressure. He revealed that then US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had flown to New Delhi to meet him and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging India not to escalate tensions or start a war.
PM Modi used these revelations to question the Congress’s approach to national security, suggesting that such decisions compromised India’s global standing and emboldened hostile forces.
He added that under his government, India no longer remains silent against terrorism, and the world now witnesses a stronger, more assertive nation that responds firmly to any act of aggression.
