Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are preparing for the impending landfall of Cyclone Montha between Kakinada and Kalingapatnam, expected on the night of October 28th. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised Montha to severe cyclonic storm status with sustained wind speeds expected to be about 90-110 km/h.

Preparations are at Full Swing

In Andhra Pradesh, responders have moved into action with disaster preparedness teams activated, evacuating residents in low-lying coastal regions and relocating expectant mothers to safe locations. Schools in a number of districts have been closed until further notice.

In Odisha, eight districts have been classified in the red zone, with evacuations initiated with shelters set up for displaced residents. Fishermen have been told not to fish as high waves began crashing into the harbour.

Why This Storm Needs Attention

Montha’s path is over the Bay of Bengal, where it is centred north-northwestward at a pace of about 15 km/h. The storm surge, along with the rainfall, could worsen as Montha approaches landfall and lead to severe flooding and wind damage along the shorelines. So far, evacuating nearly 50k people emphasises the seriousness of this storm.

Coastal Areas: Key Risks

Sea waves and storm surge: The wind impacts have already begun to deteriorate sea conditions in Odisha and coastal Andhra.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall: Vulnerability is high for districts in both states; waterlogging and inland flooding are a certainty.

Disruption to infrastructure: Schools are closed, transport schedules are modified, and emergency services are on standby.

Information for Residents

Those in coastal Andhra Pradesh or Odisha:

  • Pay attention to local advisories and media updates.
  • Avoid travel during the landfall period, or travel to locations, unless necessary.
  • Secure any loose items at your home, especially around rooftops and other open spaces.
  • If you live in low-lying areas, seek higher ground.

When the storm approaches, stay indoors and avoid the coast or neighbouring waterfronts until authorities deem it safe.

As Montha comes closer, the path of the storm and its strength will continue to be monitored carefully by authorities in the coming days. Local leaders are updating their evacuation & sheltering plans as needed; they want to do everything they can to minimise the damage and protect life. Coastal communities are advised not to let their guard down until the storm system has completely cleared inland and given clearance.
