Paresh Rawal starrer The Taj Story continues its theatrical run with a slow but steady pace. The film was released in cinemas on October 31 after weeks of discussions and heated chatter around its theme. It grabbed attention before release, but its box office performance so far shows a mixed audience response.
The Taj Story Box Office Collection Day 5
The film opened on a dull note. It collected Rs 1 crore on Day 1, which set modest expectations for the weekend. However, numbers improved slightly on Saturday with Rs 2 crore, and Sunday saw a small jump to Rs 2.75 crore. This weekend rise showed that curiosity around the film did bring viewers to theatres, even if not in huge numbers.
The film faced a tough Monday, dropping to Rs 1.06 crore. The fall slowed down its momentum and raised concerns about its weekday performance.
Tuesday brought a small relief. Thanks to weekday offers, The Taj Story earned around Rs 1.35 crore on Day 5. It was not a big jump, but enough to keep the film in the race for now.
With this, the total stands at Rs 8.16 crore. The film is yet to cross the Rs 10 crore milestone and will need consistent weekday numbers to remain stable.
Meanwhile, it continues to earn less than holdover releases Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat and Thamma, which benefit from bigger scale and star power.

What The Taj Story Is About
In the film, Paresh Rawal plays Vishnu Das, a veteran tour guide in Agra whose life changes when he starts questioning the widely accepted history of the Taj Mahal. He supports the “Tejo Mahalaya” theory, which claims the monument was once a Hindu temple before becoming Shah Jahan’s mausoleum.
When a video of him discussing this goes viral, he faces backlash and social boycott. Feeling cornered, he files a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to open the locked rooms of the Taj Mahal. The film then unfolds in a courtroom setting, filled with emotional arguments, historical references and dramatic moments ( including a demand for a “DNA test” for the monument).
Film’s Cast And Production Budget
Along with Paresh Rawal, the film features Zakir Hussain, Amruta Khanvilkar, Namit Das, and Sneha Wagh. Shishir Sharma, Brijendra Kala and Akhilendra Mishra also play key roles.
Directed by Tushar Amrish Goel and produced by CA Suresh Jha, the film is made on a budget of around Rs 25 crore. It was shot across Agra, Dehradun and other northern regions in about 45 days. Due to its sensitive subject, it reportedly went through strict scrutiny during the censor process, with the makers providing historical references for support.
Critics have largely been unimpressed, calling the film slow and one-sided. Many felt it pushes a polarising idea without enough neutrality or research depth. However, audience feedback is mixed. Some viewers praised its courage, while others strongly disagreed with its viewpoint.
The film has sparked strong online debates, and the controversy surrounding The Taj Story has become a bigger talking point than the film itself.
