Udhayanidhi Stalin: Double Meaning Dialogue Against Trisha Proves Costly? TVK on Fire!

A "Trisha" chant at a DMK rally led Udhayanidhi Stalin to make a controversial double entendre, triggering sharp criticism from TVK, BJP, and the public.

Tamil Nadu’s Leader of Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin, is facing intense criticism after an offensive remark made during a farmers’ protest in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water crisis. While criticizing Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for the state’s water shortage, a section of the crowd began chanting “Trisha, Trisha” a reference to actress Trisha Krishnan, who is widely linked to Vijay through years of on-screen pairing and long-standing public speculation about their personal relationship. Instead of ignoring the chants, Udhayanidhi paused mid-speech, smiled, and delivered a line blending “water” and Trisha’s name, an apparent double entendre that many viewed as vulgar. He quickly added that he meant the Cauvery river, but the clarification did little to calm the growing outrage.

TVK and BJP React Sharply

The clip went viral within hours, drawing swift condemnation. A TVK MLA called the remark “absolutely disgusting” and accused Udhayanidhi of degrading political discourse. BJP’s Tamil Nadu spokesperson went further, labelling the comment “obscene, vulgar and shameful,” while another BJP leader expressed disbelief that a former actor would speak this way about a fellow artist, urging the film industry to condemn it publicly.

Backlash From Across the Political Spectrum

The comment triggered swift condemnation. Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy called the remark “disgusting, obscene, vulgar and shameful”. Leaders from the ruling TVK party also weighed in sharply, with TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan condemning the comment as “absolutely disgusting” and accusing Udhayanidhi of lowering the standard of political discourse. Meanwhile, BJP leader Vinoj P. Selvam expressed shock that a former actor would speak this way about a fellow artist, urging the actors’ association to condemn the statement. Not everyone agrees the remark was intentional, however senior DMK leader TR Baalu has dismissed the allegations as “all false.”

Why This Controversy Matters

The episode adds fresh strain to Tamil Nadu’s already charged political rivalry between DMK and the newly powerful TVK, months after Vijay’s party made a strong electoral debut. With social media amplifying the clip, this controversy could shape public perception ahead of future political battles in the state.
