The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has intensified its efforts to promote maize cultivation as a sustainable and profitable alternative to the traditional wheat–paddy cycle. Highlighting the benefits of lower water consumption and higher profit margins, the AAP Punjab unit stated that the Mann government is the first to successfully implement crop diversification at the grassroots level.
Bhagwant Mann Government Pushes Maize Cultivation
Under this initiative, farmers adopting maize cultivation are not only receiving institutional support but are also being publicly honoured by the state government for contributing to Punjab’s agricultural transformation. The government claims that maize farming offers farmers an income comparable to paddy cultivation, while significantly reducing the pressure on Punjab’s rapidly depleting groundwater resources.
Promotes Crop Diversification in Punjab
Officials said the move is aimed at freeing farmers from the long-standing dependence on wheat and paddy, a cycle that has led to severe ecological imbalance. By encouraging maize, the state is working towards water conservation, soil health improvement, and long-term farm sustainability.
The Mann government has also assured farmers of market support, procurement mechanisms, and technical guidance, making maize cultivation economically viable and risk-free. Agricultural experts believe this policy could serve as a model for other states facing similar water stress challenges.
With crop diversification emerging as a key pillar of Punjab’s farm policy, the government reiterated its commitment to farmer welfare, environmental protection, and sustainable agriculture, calling maize cultivation a step towards a resilient and future-ready Punjab.
