Shashi Tharoor: Congress MP Sides With Priyanka Gandhi, Says Apprehensions Cannot Cloud India US Trade Deal, Govt Must Come Out Clean

Shashi Tharoor: Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram has casted his doubts on the recently concluded India US trade deal.

Shashi Tharoor remarked that the Indian government must provide clarity about the purported deal. Tharoor remarked that the Indian government has remarked that the deal would not hurt the Indian farmers but United States President Donald Trump has remarked that the deal would benefit the US agriculture sector.

Shashi Tharoor On The India US Trade Deal

Shashi Tharoor commented that the country’s entire import bill is $700 billion and Trump has been claiming that the entire US India trade deal would be of $500 billion. The Congress MP remarked does this mean India would stop buying from all other nations.

Tharoor also remarked that the only information about the deal was made available through the Tweets and press statements of Trump with no absolute details in the offering. Shashi Tharoor that it would be premature to celebrate the deal as of now as no details have been provided by now.

Tharoor went on to add that the NDA government must take the Indian parliament into confidence and explain clearly and fully as of what has been agreed upon. Tharoor called the absence of absolute information in a clear way is the core issue between the government and the opposition parties.

Tariff Cuts By Trump

The US President in his announcement remarked that USA would immediately reduce all tariffs on goods made in India to 18 percent. Trump also said that the Asian superpower had agreed to cut tarriffs and non-tariff barriers on goods originating from the United States to zero. Trump also added that India would buy more than $500 billion worth of American agricultural, coal, technology, energy and other products while halting oil purchases from Russia.

Indian PM Narendra Modi described the India USA trade deal as a “wonderful announcement”.
