Egg Benefits: You’ve Been Eating It Wrong! Harvard-Trained Doctor Reveals Why Yolks Are More Important Than Whites

Learn why whole eggs are better than just whites – support brain, eyes, skin and heart health with simple daily egg benefits.

Egg Benefits: Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. Packed with high-quality protein, they support muscle growth, keep you full for longer, and provide a range of essential nutrients. Yet, many people are confused about whether eating eggs daily is healthy, or if egg yolks should be avoided due to cholesterol concerns.

Recently, Dr Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, explained on Instagram the surprising benefits of eating whole eggs every day and why you shouldn’t just stick to egg whites.

Egg Benefits: How Daily Eggs Improve Health

Dr Sethi highlighted several ways that including eggs in your daily diet can boost overall health:

  1. Better Brain Function
Eggs are rich in choline, a nutrient that helps produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter crucial for memory and focus. Eating eggs regularly can therefore support brain health.
  2. Improved Cholesterol Profile
Contrary to popular belief, eggs can actually improve your cholesterol balance. Dr Sethi noted that consuming eggs may increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol, in many people, helping maintain heart health.
  3. Stronger Eyes
Egg yolks contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that protect the eyes from high-energy blue light and support overall eye health. Regular egg consumption can therefore help maintain better vision.
  4. Healthier Skin, Hair And Nails
Eggs are rich in sulphur-containing amino acids, which help the body produce keratin. Keratin is essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails, making eggs a natural beauty food.

For those following a plant-based diet, Dr Sethi suggests tofu, tempeh and edamame as good protein alternatives.

Why Eating Whole Eggs Matters

Many people eat only egg whites to avoid cholesterol in yolks. However, Dr Alok Chopra, a cardiologist with over 40 years of experience, explains that egg whites alone are an inflammatory protein. Eggs are most nutritious when eaten whole.

Dr Chopra said, “The yolk contains most of the nutrients. It provides more vitamin A, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids than the whites. Cholesterol in yolks is often misunderstood. It’s essential for cell structure, hormone production, brain function, and a healthy immune system.”

In short, ditch the fear of egg yolks. Including whole eggs in your diet can boost brain health, improve vision, strengthen hair and nails and even enhance cholesterol balance. Eating eggs the right way is simple, natural and highly beneficial.
