Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has criticized the Election Commission of India following the temporary ban on Trinamool Congress factions from using the party’s name and its traditional Flowers and Grass election symbol in the forthcoming West Bengal by-elections.

Rahul Gandhi has reacted to this decision by saying that the BJP and the Election Commission have been working in tandem in an attempt to break up the opposition parties and later confiscate their election symbols. Rahul Gandhi mentioned other instances where the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party got into trouble due to similar situations.

Rahul Gandhi called the developments “vote chori, sarkar chori, ab party chori” saying that these are examples of a decline in democratic processes. He also stated that the ECI has failed to protect the electoral mandates, as it should.
Why has the TMC symbol been frozen?
The ECI’s interim order followed competing claims over control of the All India Trinamool Congress from rival factions. The Commission barred both sides from using the original party name and Flowers and Grass symbol for the upcoming bypolls while the dispute is considered under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols Order. The Commission said the interim arrangement was intended to place the rival groups on an equal footing and protect their rights and interests until a final decision is reached. Both factions were directed to submit alternative names and symbols for the bypolls.
The dispute moves into the bypoll battle
The development comes ahead of the West Bengal bypolls scheduled for October 6. The freeze means the rival factions will contest the immediate elections without using the original TMC name and symbol, adding a new dimension to the ongoing dispute over control of the party. Rahul Gandhi has framed the issue as one extending beyond Mamata Banerjee and the TMC, saying it concerns political parties and voters seeking free and fair elections. His comments have added a wider political dimension to the ECI’s interim order and the continuing TMC organisational dispute.
