Top 5 Hatchbacks: The best selling Hatchbacks in India based on the actual sales figures, all you need to know

Top 5 Hatchbacks: Hatchbacks and SUVs are getting popular in India, particularly among first-time purchasers and clients in rural areas. The buyers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities are contributing to this as well. These hatchbacks, which are available in petrol, diesel, and hybrid variants, provide better value for money while being easier to roam on city roads.

These are also fuel efficient, and are on same level as of sedans, when it comes to safety. Hatchback sales grew 21.73 percent year on year to 1,16,848 units in August 2022, up from 95,990 units in August 2021. However, MoM sales fell 6.75 percent from 1,25,309 units sold in July 2022.

Which hatchback recorded the best figure?

The Baleno topped the list, with 18,418 units sold in the previous month, a 17.72 percent increase over the 15,646 units sold in August 2021. This was a 2,772 unit volume increase with a 15.76 percent share. MoM sales grew 2.55 percent from 17,960 units sold in July 2022.

Maruti WagonR, which was ranked at No. 2, saw a YoY increase of 91.09 percent, from 9,628 units sold in August 2022 to 18,398 units. With sales of 22,588 units, representing an 18.55 percent MoM decline, the WagonR now holds a 15.75 percent market share, down from the 18.03 percent it held in July 2022. Next, the Maruti Alto, at second number got 14,388 units sold, an increase of 8.70 % over the 13,236 units sold in August 2021. From 9,065 units sold in July 2021, MoM sales of the Alto climbed by 58.72 percent.

The fourth-placed Maruti Suzuki Swift has YoY and MoM de-growth. Sales in August 2022 totaled 11,275 units, a 9.68 percent decrease from the 12,483 units sold in August 2021. From 17,359 units old in July 2022, MoM sales decreased by 35.71%. Additionally, market share decreased, going from 14% to 9.65% MoM.

With the Grand i10 NIOS, which the company sold 9,724 units in the past month–up 15.59 percent from 8,023 units sold in August, 2021–Hyundai entered in the top 5. However, sales were down from MoM by 7.26 % from 10,000 units sold in July 2022. The 2023 Hyundai i10 NIOS is undergoing testing and is scheduled to go on sales sometime next year.
