It looks like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra will be a very popular top smartphone when it comes out in early 2026, probably in February.  Some important details about its design, camera system, and lineup plan have been leaked or rumoured recently.

Lineup and Design of the Galaxy S26 Ultra

Samsung might break from its usual Galaxy S series trend and release four models in the S26 line: the base S26, the S26 Plus or Edge, the S26 Ultra, and maybe an S26 Edge model to replace the Plus model.  Following the lead set by the Galaxy S25 Edge, this would offer a thinner and lighter design choice along with the main models.

Camera Set Up

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is likely to keep the 200-megapixel main camera sensor that was in the S23, S24, and S25 Ultra. It will likely be an improved version of the ISOCELL HP2 sensor that was used in those phones.  People were expecting a big camera update, but Samsung seems to be using a lot of the same camera hardware and making improvements mostly to AI-powered picture processing rather than sensor changes.

The camera setup has the following:

  • A main camera with 200MP (ISOCELL HP2 or a better version of it)
  • Most likely taken from the S25 Ultra, this is a 50MP ultrawide camera.
  • A 200MP periscope long lens that could be improved for better zoom and picture quality
  • A telephoto lens with a focal length that is a little longer (3.5x zoom instead of 3x).

Also, leaks show that Samsung is working on making the camera sensor for the S26 Ultra thinner.  To do this, an inkjet-printed anti-reflective layer is used instead of the usual thin cover films between the lenses. This makes the optical stack tighter and cuts down on the thickness of the camera bump.  With this new feature, the S26 Ultra might feel much sleeker and more polished in your hand.

Added Features

In contrast to earlier rumours, the Galaxy S26 Ultra might not have a picture camera under the screen (UDC).  It is said that Samsung put off using this technology in the S series because of cost and other factors, even though it has been used in the Galaxy Z Fold series since 2021.

The S Pen should still work with the Ultra, maybe with better Bluetooth connectivity. This will keep the Ultra's focus on efficiency.

Timeline for Launch

Samsung's Galaxy S26 series is likely to come out in the first three months of 2026. The most likely month for the official launch event is February.

Samsung seems to be working on making the Galaxy S26 Ultra better at what it does well, like photos and design, instead of making big changes to the hardware.  Fans can expect a premium phone that looks good, is powerful, has cutting-edge AI camera features, and is easy to use.
