The 8th Pay Commission has completed around 10 months since its formation, with the commission currently holding consultations with central government employees, pensioners and their organisations on salary, pension and allowance-related issues.

The commission was constituted on November 3, 2025, and has been given 18 months to submit its recommendations. This means it has roughly until May 2027 to submit its report. However, no final decision has yet been announced on the fitment factor, Dearness Allowance (DA) merger or revised House Rent Allowance (HRA) rates.
8th Pay Commission Meetings Underway
The commission has been conducting meetings with employee and pensioner organisations in different parts of the country.
Recently, consultations were held in Chandigarh from September 16 to 18, following meetings in cities including Chennai and Puducherry. The commission is scheduled to hold its next meeting in Bengaluru on October 7 and 8, 2026.
These meetings are part of the consultation process through which the commission is gathering views on pay, allowances, pensions and other service-related matters.
Fitment Factor: No Final Decision Yet
The fitment factor is one of the most closely watched issues among central government employees because it will influence the calculation of revised basic pay.
Employee organisations have submitted different demands for a higher fitment factor. Some organisations have sought a factor close to 4, while other proposals have suggested different figures.
For example, if a hypothetical fitment factor of 2 were applied to the current Level 1 basic pay of ₹18,000, the revised basic pay would mathematically become ₹36,000. However, this is only an illustration and not an announced 8th Pay Commission decision.
