Amid apprehensions of rising prices of onion after tomato, the government has geared up to curb it. The government has imposed a custom duty of 40 per cent on the export of onions. The Finance Ministry has also issued orders for this. According to the government order, the rising prices in the domestic market will be controlled through this. The order of export duty will remain in force till 31 December 2023.
Export Duty on Onion: Decision taken in public interest
The Finance Ministry said in a notification that 40 percent export duty has been imposed on onions till December 31, 2023. The export duty has been imposed amid reports that onion prices are expected to rise in September. According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), this decision has been taken in public interest. Earlier, the government had also banned the export of wheat and rice.
Tomato will be sold for Rs 40 per kg
Apart from onions, the government had also taken a big step to provide relief from the rising prices of tomatoes. The government is going to sell tomatoes from 20 August 2023 at the rate of Rs 40 per kg. The Consumer Affairs Department has directed NAFED and NCCF to sell tomatoes at Rs 40 on August 20. Apart from this, the prices have come down in the retail market as well. Retail sale of tomatoes in Delhi-NCR started from July 14, 2023.
