After a brief period of relief when the government offered subsidized rates for tomatoes, the prices in the country have surged once again. About a month ago, there was a 300% spike in retail rates, prompting the government to step in and provide some relief. However, despite the drop to around Rs 120 per kilo last week, the prices have risen again and are now beyond Rs 200 per kilo.
Tomato prices have reached Rs 250-260 per kilo
In Delhi, tomato prices have reached Rs 250-260 per kilo, as reported by PTI. Mother Dairy’s Safal outlets sold tomatoes for Rs 259 per kilo on August 2. In Azadpur Mandi, which is Asia’s largest wholesale market for vegetables, tomatoes are being retailed at Rs 150-200 per kilo.
According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ data from August 3, the price of tomatoes in Delhi has surged to Rs 213, whereas the average price of tomatoes across the country stood at Rs 140.1 per kilo on the same date, compared to Rs 137.06 the day before. Just a week ago, the average price was Rs 120 per kilo.
Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr witnessed the highest rate in the country, with tomatoes selling at a staggering Rs 263 per kilo on August 2.
