PM Awas Yojana: Under PMAY(U) 2.0, financial assistance will be provided to 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families to construct, purchase or rent a house for the next 5 years ending 2029. Under PMAY (G), additional 2 crore houses will be built during year 2024 to 2029.
Up gradation of two apps to ease the survey for PMAY
Central government upgraded two popular apps for PMAY (G): AWAASPLUS 2024 and AWAASSAKHI. Now beneficiaries can do survey themselves. These apps now support eight languages including English, Hindi, Punjabi and Bangla. Government is promoting these apps so that true beneficiaries can be recognised.
Benefits for families under PMAY (U) 2.0
The Government will provide assistance up to ₹ 2.50 lakh per unit for every family under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0
Eligibility for PMAY (U) 2.0
• A family will comprise of husband, wife, unmarried sons and/or unmarried daughters.
• Family should belong to EWS/LIG/MIG segments
• Family should be living in urban areas
• Family should not own a pucca house either in his/her name or in the name of any member of his/her family in any part of India.
Options available under PMAY (U) 2.0
The Scheme will be implemented through following four verticals which provides flexibility to the beneficiaries/States/UTs to choose from different options available under the scheme:
• Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC)
• Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP)
• Affordable Rental Housing (ARH)
• Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS)
Features of house under PMAY (U) 2.0
• Construction of house with minimum carpet area of 30sqm along with basic civic amenities and social infrastructure.
• States/UTs have the flexibility in terms of determining the size of houses up to 45sqm and other facilities in consultation with the Ministry, without any enhancement in financial assistance from Government of India.
• States/UTs will provide trunk infrastructure (roads, electricity grids, water, sewage etc.) from their own resources up to project site.
Who will be given preference under the Scheme PMAY (U) 2.0?
• Widows, single women, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, trans genders,
• Persons belonging to scheduled castes/scheduled tribes
• Minorities and other weaker and vulnerable sections of the society.
• Special focus will be given to Safai Karmi, Street Vendors identified under the PM SVANidhi Scheme and different artisans under the Pradhan Mantri-Vishwakarma Scheme, Anganwadi workers, Building and Other Construction Workers, residents of slums/chawls and other groups identified during operation of PMAY-U 2.0.

Progress under PMAY (U)
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) was launched on 25th June 2015. As of 15th July 2024, PMAY(U) 118.64 lakh houses has been sanctioned and 84.7 lakh houses has been completed.
Benefits for families under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin)
Eligible family will get financial assistance of ₹ 1.20 lakh in plain areas and ₹ 1.30 lakh in North Eastern Region States and Hill States of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Eligibility for Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin)
• All households without any shelter/house
• Households with kuccha houses
• Destitute households or those living on alms.
• Manual scavengers
• Primitive tribal groups
• Legally released bonded laborers
Priorities for Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin)
Priorities will be given based on cumulative deprivation scores, calculated using the following socio-economic parameters:
• Households with no adult member aged 16 to 59.
• Female-headed households with no adult male member.
• Households with no literate adult above 25 years.
• Households with a disabled member and no able-bodied adult.
• Landless households dependent on manual casual labor.
Who are excluded from PMAY (G)?
• Households with a Kisan Credit Card having a credit limit of ₹50,000 or more.
• Government employees or those with non-agricultural enterprises.
• Households with monthly income over ₹15,000 or those paying income tax.
• Households owning assets such as refrigerators, landline phones, or irrigated land (more than 2.5 acres).
Features of houses under PMAY (G)
• Minimum area of 25sqm including a dedicated area for hygienic cooking.
• The beneficiaries will construct quality houses using local materials and trained masons.
• The beneficiary also has a wide selection of structurally sound, aesthetically, culturally, and environmentally appropriate house designs available rather than standard cement concrete house designs.
Progress under PMAY (G)
The scheme was started from 1st April 2016. Original target was 2.95 crore houses to be completed by 2023-24 but the scheme extended to build 2 crore more houses. As on 02.02.2025, a cumulative target of 3.79 crore houses have been allotted to States/UTs out of which 2.69 crore houses have been completed.
How to apply to get benefits under PMAY (G)
Application under PMAY(G) can be done online or offline. The online application is done on official PMAY-G website by filling the necessary details about Aadhaar, bank and other required documents. Offline applications can be received from the Gram Panchayat office, filled out, and submitted to the concerned authorities.
