Sunjay Kapur, noted industrialist, avid polo player, and former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53. According to initial reports, he suffered a heart attack after accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match—a rare and tragic occurrence that has left the business and social circles in shock.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 5 PM at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in New Delhi, the family said in an official press note on Wednesday.
A prayer meeting in his memory has been scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2025, between 4 and 5 PM at the Durbar Hall of Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi.
A Life of Achievement
Sunjay Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading manufacturer of components for electric vehicles, and a respected figure in the Indian auto industry. His passion for polo made him a recognized face in India’s elite sporting circles.
He was previously married to actor Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016. The couple had two children together — Samaira and Kiaan. He is also survived by his mother Mrs. Rani Surinder Kapur, wife Mrs. Priya Kapur, and children Safira and Azarias, as noted in the family message.
His Final Days
Just hours before his untimely death, Sunjay had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express condolences on the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad, showing his empathy and awareness of national events.
"Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour. #planecrash," he had written.
Earlier on June 9, he had shared a motivational post, writing:
"Progress demands bold choices, not perfect conditions. #MondayMotivation"
These now stand as his final public reflections — a blend of compassion and ambition, much like the man himself.
Remembered in Prayer
The prayer meeting invitation included a verse from the Guru Granth Sahib, emphasizing a life well-lived through devotion and hard work:
"जिनी नामु धिआइआ गए मसकति घालि। नानक ते मुख उजले केती छुटी नालि।"
Those who remembered the Name and lived with effort, Nanak says their faces shine and many are liberated along with them.
The untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J Kapur (1971–2025) has left a void in the world of industry and equestrian sport. Friends, family, and colleagues across the country mourn the loss of a man remembered for his grace, ambition, and enduring contributions.
