G20 Summit: As India retains its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy, the country's wealthiest businessmen, led by billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, will join G20 leaders for a dinner in the nation's capital on Saturday.
In order to present India as a desirable location for trade and investment, particularly as China's economic growth slows down, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to utilise his position of leadership within the G20, an association of the world's most significant economies.
Among those likely to attend the meeting in New Delhi are US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
500 business leaders invited
N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Sunil Mittal, the founder and CEO of Bharti Airtel, Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, and Gautam Adani are among the 500 business leaders who have been invited, according to Reuters, which cited two sources.
"This dinner… will host various world leaders and provides an opportunity to bring together India's business elite during the leaders' summit," said an Indian official who spoke to the news agency.
Putin and Xi Jinping to not attend summit
Notably, neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese President Xi Jinping will be present at the summit this weekend.
PM Narendra Modi will have another chance at the event on Saturday to emphasise India's commercial and investment opportunities.
The event will take place in a brand-new, $300 million venue shaped like a conch shell, and the food will feature Indian cuisine with a focus on millets, a grain that the nation has been promoting.
Both Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani alternated as Asia's richest people while competing in a variety of areas, including telecommunications, media, energy, and banking.
