OYO, a leading Indian hospitality chain, has implemented a fresh set of guidelines aimed at addressing local concerns. The new rules allow partner hotels to refuse check-ins to unmarried couples, starting in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut. This change aligns with local social sensibilities and is expected to set a precedent for other regions.

Proof of Relationship Now Mandatory

Under this policy, couples—whether booking online or offline—must present valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in. Partner hotels can exercise their discretion to deny bookings that don’t meet the criteria. According to OYO, this step is based on feedback from civil society groups, particularly in Meerut, urging action against practices perceived as misaligned with societal norms.

Focus on Community Feedback

The company revealed it had received multiple requests from Meerut residents and others in nearby cities to curb accommodations for unmarried couples. "We are committed to balancing individual freedoms with local social sensibilities," said Pawas Sharma, Region Head of OYO North India. Sharma also emphasised the company’s intent to periodically review the policy’s impact.

Strengthening OYO’s Reputation

This initiative is part of a broader effort by OYO to enhance its reputation as a safe and family-friendly hospitality provider. The programme also aims to encourage longer stays, attract repeat customers, and foster trust among diverse traveler segments, including students, families, and solo adventurers.

Nationwide Measures for Safer Hospitality

OYO has launched pan-India initiatives, such as hosting joint seminars with police and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels promoting unethical activities, and taking action against unauthorised properties using the OYO name. These efforts underline OYO’s dedication to responsible hospitality practices.

By prioritising local social sensibilities and community feedback, OYO hopes to strike a balance between personal liberty and societal expectations.
