Patanjali: On Tuesday, March 19, the Supreme Court ordered the Ayurvedic company Patanjali Ayurved Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna and Yoga Guru Ramdev to come before the court on the following hearing date for their failure to reply to the notice of contempt in the matter involving the company’s deceptive advertisement.
Failure to Respond
Judges Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah’s bench expressed strong disapproval of the company and Balkrishna’s failure to respond to earlier notices from the court explaining why contempt should not be brought against them for ostensibly breaking the undertaking given to the court. Ramdev was also given a notice by the bench to explain why he should not be charged with contempt.
Supreme Court Issues Contempt Notice to Patanjali Ayurved
The highest court earlier on February 28 sent a contempt notice to Patanjali Ayurved, the firm owned by yoga guru Ramdev, and its managing director, Acharya Balakrishna, for their continued dissemination of deceptive advertisements that professed to permanently treat a number of ailments. Declaring that the entire nation had been duped, the highest court temporarily prohibited Patanjali from airing health-related commercials.
