Cash-for-Query Case: The Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha has called upon Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament, Mahua Moitra, to appear before them on October 31 in relation to allegations of accepting bribes in exchange for raising questions in Parliament.

The move comes after the committee’s first meeting regarding the issue earlier in the day, where they also recorded statements from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey, the complainant, and Supreme Court attorney Jai Anant Dehadrai, who claimed that Moitra accepted bribes for posing inquiries targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani.

Nishikant Dubey cited evidence provided by Dehadrai:

Nishikant Dubey cited evidence provided by Dehadrai, alleging that a significant portion of Moitra’s recent questions in the Lok Sabha were focused on the Adani Group. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Biral forwarded the matter to the committee, which is led by BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar.

Dubey asserted that the attorney, who was previously associated with Moitra but had a falling out, had presented undeniable proof of bribery transactions between her and businessman Darshan Hiranandani, all aimed at targeting the Prime Minister and the Adani Group.

Mahua Moitra dismissed all the allegations:

Both Moitra and Dubey have made their stances clear, with Moitra dismissing the allegations as “jilted ex’s lies” and accusing the Adani Group of trying to hinder her from scrutinizing the conglomerate. She also claimed that the BJP was orchestrating a plot to oust her from the Lok Sabha.

In response to these allegations, the Trinamool Congress has suggested that the matter be investigated by the appropriate parliamentary forum. The party, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has advised Moitra to clarify her position on the accusations. TMC MP Derek O’Brien commented on the matter, stating that the party is aware of the reports and is awaiting the results of the parliamentary investigation before making any decisions.
