Presidential election 2022: Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan attended a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA on Sunday to prepare for the presidential election. Chirag Paswan’s presence in this meeting assumes significance as he had distanced himself from the ruling NDA meetings after he was out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.
Chirag Paswan, who became a Lok Sabha MP for the second time, was seen walking towards the meeting place along with several other MPs, mostly from the BJP. In this meeting a presentation was made on voting for the Presidential election. Paswan had pulled out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state during the Bihar assembly elections for opposing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party Janata Dal (United). JD(U) is the largest ally of BJP in Bihar.
He then claimed that he remained an ally of the BJP at the national level and had left the alliance in Bihar for state-specific reasons. However, he did not attend the NDA meetings due to stiff resistance from the JD(U). Kumar’s party had reacted sharply to the BJP’s invitation to attend a meeting of the ruling coalition ahead of the budget session of Parliament, for which Paswan did not attend.
Party MPs including JDU President Lalan Singh attended the meeting held in the Parliament premises on Sunday. Paswan’s relations with the BJP soured when his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras broke the Lok Janshakti Party and was accompanied by all other party MPs. The Paras faction was also recognized as the real LJP in the Lok Sabha and took oath as a minister in the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Chirag Paswan had targeted the BJP after he was evicted from the government bungalow which was allotted to his father and Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan.
