Country Faced Worst Heat After 122 Years

Heatwave in Delhi: Many areas of the country faced the worst heat after 122 years in April, but even in the month of May, there is no relief from the heat. The temperature in Delhi had reached 46 degrees on Friday, but on Saturday it remained up to 43.5 degrees. There will be thunderstorms like this on Sunday as well. However, there may be some relief from thunderstorms and light rain on Monday and Wednesday. At the same time, there was a severe heat wave in UP and in Banda it was as if embers rained with 47.4 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department warned on Saturday that North-West and Central India recorded the highest average maximum temperature in April this year since 1990. There is no hope of getting relief from the heat even in May.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was 25.7 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees above normal. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra says that nights will be hotter in May in most areas including Delhi. The highest temperature in Delhi was 44.6 degree Celsius in Palam area. This was the highest temperature in five years in Delhi in the month of April. At the same time, the Meteorological Department says that Delhi has faced the worst heat in 72 years in April, as the monthly average temperature was 40.2 degrees Celsius, which was about 4 degrees above normal. Earlier in April it was so hot.

On temperature and rainfall for May, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that most parts of the country will experience heat even during the month of May except in some areas of southern peninsular India. He said that April this year in north-west and central India was the hottest in the last 122 years, with average maximum temperatures reaching 35.9 degrees Celsius and 37.78 degrees Celsius respectively.

The average maximum temperature in North-West India in April 2010 was 35.4 °C, while in Central India the mean maximum temperature during April 1973 was 37.75 °C.

Mohapatra said that most parts of north-west India – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana – will face above-normal temperatures in May as well. The average temperature across the country during April was recorded at 35.05 degrees Celsius, which is the fourth highest in 122 years. He said that the average rainfall in the country during May this year is likely to be above normal. It also said that in May, there is a possibility of below normal rains in parts of North-West and Northeast India as well as South-East Peninsula.
