Former India batsman Yashpal Sharma, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, has passed away at his home in Noida. He was 66 years of age.
. “Yes, Yashpal is no more with us. We just received the information from his family,” a former India teammate of Yashpal confirmed to PTI.
According to various media reports, Sharma suffered a heart attack after returning from morning walk and collapsed at around 7.30 am. He is survived by his wife Renu Sharma, two daughters Puja, Preeti and son Chirag Sharma.
Sharma made his ODI debut earlier in 1978 against Pakistan while amassing 883 runs at an average of 28.48. He played 160 matches while scoring 8, 933 runs that included 21 centuries with a highest score 201* at Ranaji where he represented three teams including Haryana and Railways.
He was also a national selector during early part of 2000 and is also known for his various roles with Board of Control for Cricket in India. He served as a national selector across two stints, first from 2004 to 2005, and later from 2008 to 2011. He also appeared as a cricket expert at various channels.
