Young people in France will be able to get free condoms from next year in an effort to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday. “In pharmacies, from January 1, condoms will be free for people aged 18 to 25,” Macron told reporters during an event about young people’s health.

STDs in France has increased by about 30 percent
Health officials estimate that the rate of STDs in France has increased by about 30 percent in 2020 and 2021. By giving free condoms, the government is trying to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). The plan to provide free condoms comes after the country started offering free birth control to all women below the age of 25, expanding the scheme to women below the age of 18. So that young women do not stop taking contraceptives.
In France, condoms are already reimbursed by the national healthcare system if they are prescribed by a doctor or midwife. Health officials estimate that the rate of STDs in France is expected to increase by about 30% in 2020 and 2021.
