5 cases of Covid’s XBB.1.5 variant found in India

A new form of the variant Omicron XBB.1.5 of the corona virus has raised concerns in many countries, including India, where cases have been reported. The danger is that this variant of Covid-19 has the ability to infect even those people who have been vaccinated. Experts gave this information on Tuesday. Now 5 cases of Covid’s XBB.1.5 variant found in India.

According to Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the National IMA Covid Task Force, the XBB.1.5 variant is an upgraded version of XBB, a recombinant sub-lineage of Omicron. Cases of XBB.1.5 infection were detected a few months ago in several countries such as Singapore and later India.

“XBB.1.5 has a greater ability to bind itself to the human ACE-2 receptor while maintaining the excellent immunogenicity of its earlier variant,” he added. Those who have had this infection before or have also been vaccinated.

What did the expert say about the XBB variant being more serious?

The expert said, ‘Immune evasion virus has the ability to infect those people who had earlier infection or vaccination or both. XBB.1.5 achieved this by creating a rare type of mutation called F486P located in its RBD (Receptor Binding Domain). It is not yet known whether it causes more serious diseases.’ Although experts believe that this is not likely to happen.

BA.2.75 has more effect than XBB

However, he added that continued vigilance is needed to see whether these ongoing genetic changes enable the virus to cause more severe disease. He said, “The latest genomic surveillance data from India shows the prevalence of XBB to be 20 per cent, while the older version Ba.2.75 is still dominant. This situation can change.”
