Delhi’s air quality remains in ‘very poor’ category, may further deteriorate

Delhi Air : The air quality in Delhi continued to remain in the ‘very poor’ category on Sunday. Government agencies said the air quality may further deteriorate due to unfavourable meteorological conditions. On Sunday the city’s 24-hour average AQI was 274, while it was 251 on Saturday, 296 on Friday, 283 on Thursday and 211 on Wednesday.

The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city stood at 350. According to official data, the AQI in Narela, Delhi stood at 385. While the AQI in Okhla Phase-2 stood at 370, Wazirpur stood at 417, Mundka stood at 392, Anand Vihar stood at 469, ITO stood at 374, and R K Puram stood at 376.

Farm fire

Sudden spike in incidents of farm fires may push the air quality of the national capital into ‘severe’zone.

According to an official notification, construction work and demolition activities will be prohibited in Delhi (except for essential projects) till further orders. On Saturday, the overall AQI in Delhi was recorded at 309. More restrictions were imposed in the city as the air quality index (AQI) slipped into ‘severe’ category.

GRAP 3 category

The restrictions were imposed under GRAP stage 3. The GRAP Sub-Committee has decided to implement Stage III of GRAP in the entire NCR in a move to prevent further deterioration of air quality.

Stubble fires from the neighbouring and Punjab are posing serious threat to Delhi air quality. Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said the Stage 3 of GRAP was imposed due to unfavorable meteorological conditions with slower wind speeds and a sudden spike in incidents of stubble fire incidents.
