Indian-American Republican Presidential Aspirant Vows to ‘Gut’ H-1B Visa Program

The H-1B visa program is widely used by technology companies to employ foreign workers with specialized skills in the US.

Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian-American Republican presidential aspirant, has pledged to overhaul the H-1B visa program if elected in 2024. Ramaswamy has referred to the H-1B visa system as “indentured servitude” and intends to replace the lottery-based system with a meritocratic admission process.

H-1B visa program is widely used by technology companies

The H-1B visa program is widely used by technology companies to employ foreign workers with specialized skills in the US. However, Ramaswamy believes that the current system is detrimental to all parties involved and should be replaced with a merit-based system. He also advocates for the elimination of chain-based migration.

Despite having used the H-1B visa program 29 times himself, Ramaswamy argues that the system is flawed and needs reform. He believes that family-based immigrants are not the same as merit-based immigrants who contribute to the country’s skill pool.

Ramaswamy served as the CEO of Roivant Sciences until February 2021, during which time the company made extensive use of the H-1B visa program to hire employees. His policy stance on H-1B visas has sparked debate given his previous business practices. However, his press secretary maintains that the role of a policymaker is to address the flaws in the system for the benefit of the country as a whole.
