Toxic Receipts! New Study Finds Dangerous Chemicals on Printed Slips You Get From the ATM or Grocery Stores

ATM receipts :Do you routinely handle receipts when purchasing groceries or withdrawing cash from ATMs? Warning, a report indicates that receipts include a source of hormone-disrupting substances in our bodies that is underappreciated. Receipt sheets have high levels of bisphenols, especially bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS), which have been linked to reproductive harm, according to the Ecology Center, a US non-profit organisation working for environmental health.

80% of the receipts were found to contain bisphenol

They examined 374 receipts from 144 large chain retailers throughout 22 US states and the District of Columbia for their report. The most prevalent ones included, among others, supermarkets, eateries, department stores, pharmacies, and petrol stations. Almost 80% of the receipts were found to contain bisphenol, they discovered (BPS or BPA). “Hormone-disrupting bisphenols are commonly exposed through receipts, which are easily absorbed through the skin. According to our research, the majority of merchants utilise paper with a bisphenol coating “Environmental health activist Melissa Cooper Sargent from the Ecology Center of Michigan said in a statement.

BPS is promoted as a safer alternative to BPA

“Making the switch to non-toxic paper is simple. We compel merchants to stop distributing chemically laced paper to customers and endanger their staff by doing so “Added she. Also, the investigation revealed that 20% of receipts contained BPS, a safer chemical alternative. Although BPS is promoted as a safer alternative to BPA, the researchers noted that both substances are endocrine-disrupting compounds associated to health problems, including cancer. Together with customers, employees of these establishments may also be more vulnerable due of their “continuous potential exposure to endocrine disrupting BPS or BPA,” according to the paper.
