Let’s talk about Delhi’s Nest Man who is building homes for hundreds of birds. How he started his journey, the reason behind it and much more.

On being asked how he felt after providing a house to the birds he described his views as “The blessed feeling of being able to give a home to someone cannot be possibly expressed in words”.Khatri hails from Delhi,he started his journey of saving birds in the city by building them houses made from eco-friendly material. The way he helped the birds bore fruit as he received much appreciation from people all over the city and then India.

Rakesh Khatri “Nest Man” of Delhi.

He began doing this work after noticing that his home in Old Delhi was missing the chirping and melodious sound of birds. From childhood the gesture of caring for birds emerged as his elders warn him to not to switch on the fan as the birds nested in the high corners or sky lights in the room may get injured. Now he stays in Ashok Vihar, where birds are unable to enter people’s houses and make nests. They need gaps in walls, but now people become worried when they see holes in their walls. Bushes too have disappeared. So where will birds make their homes,” Khatri told Life Beyond Numbers.

In starting he faced many hardships as initially he made coconut shells. The birds were not using it as their nest. But Khatri tried other things instead of giving up he researched about the suitable material for birds which were bamboo sticks, jute thread, and husk.He set up 20 nests in his locality Ashok Vihar. Now, Khatri has successfully made over 1.25 lakh nests for birds all over India. He was also felicitated with a record in the Limca Book of Records for the highest number of workshops conducted to teach participants how to make handmade nests across the country.
