On August 23, a person living in the neighborhood in unrequited love, sprinkled petrol on the girl student and set her on fire. She was sleeping in the house at the time of the incident. The attack took place around 4.30 am on Tuesday. The girl told in her statement that in the morning accused Shahrukh was standing in front of the window of the room. He was holding a can with a flammable liquid and a match.

The police officer said that the accused threw flammable liquid into the room and burnt the curtains. He threw even more fluid inside the room so that she could not escape. Noor Mustafa said she was badly trapped inside. She was rescued by her family and neighbors and taken to Dumka Medical College and Hospital, which assessed that she suffered 95 per cent burns.
