Opposition vice president candidate Margaret Alva: The opposition has announced the candidate for the post of Vice President. The opposition has stamped the name of Margaret Alva. Margaret Alva is not a new name in Indian politics. She has been the governor of the state of Rajasthan. Along with this, she served as the first woman governor of Uttarakhand from 6 August 2009 to 14 May 2012.

She is a senior member of the Indian National Congress and General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. Along with this, she is also honored with Mercy Ravi Award.

Margaret Alva was born on 14 April 1942 in Mangalore to Pascal Ambrose Nazareth and Elizabeth Nazareth. Alva did her higher education from Bangalore, where she studied at Mount Carmel College and Government Law College.

Margaret married Niranjan Alva on 24 May 1964. She has one daughter and three sons. Her two sons Niret Alva and Nikhil Alva together founded Meditech Salt Company in 1992, which is a television software company.

Margaret’s husband Niranjan Alva is the son of freedom fighter and the first couple MPs of the Indian Parliament, Joaquim Alva and Violet Alva. Along with being the General Secretary of the Congress Party and playing five innings (1974 to 2004) as a Tejashwi MP, she has also been a Minister of State for four important departments in the Central Government.

As an MP, she played a role in passing many laws for women’s welfare. She made a valuable contribution in the process of making blue prints of policies related to women empowerment and getting them accepted by the Central and State Governments. The President of South Africa even gave her a national honor for her support in fighting the fight against apartheid in the freedom struggle there. Apart from being on several committees of Parliament, she has also been on the panel of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Alva made a mark as an advocate very soon after her studies. While in the profession of legal battle, she also tried her hand in the field of fine arts and home-decoration like making oil paintings. She had once said that when she took the initiative of law for the prevention of Sati, the MPs of Rajput society met her.
