Namo Bharat Train Expansion: PM Narendra Modi, Pushkar Singh Dhami Back Meerut–Rishikesh Corridor as DPR Process Begins

The expansion is expected to improve connectivity between the two states while offering faster, more convenient travel for commuters, pilgrims, and tourists.

The proposed extension of the Namo Bharat Train from Meerut to Rishikesh has taken a significant step forward, with funds released for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Authorities have been given a timeline of seven months to complete the DPR, paving the way for the next phase of the regional rapid transit expansion.

The proposed corridor follows the success of the existing 82-kilometre Namo Bharat route between Modipuram (Meerut) and Delhi, which has witnessed strong passenger demand since operations began. The popularity of the service has led to additional train trips during peak hours to accommodate rising commuter traffic.

The proposal to extend the high-speed regional rail network to Rishikesh gained momentum after the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments reached a consensus on the project. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity between the two states while offering faster, more convenient travel for commuters, pilgrims, and tourists.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently presented the proposal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, seeking support for the ambitious rail corridor.

If approved after the DPR stage, the Meerut–Rishikesh Namo Bharat corridor is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, boost tourism, and support economic development across western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The project would also complement India’s growing network of modern rapid rail infrastructure.
