National Food Security Mission

At its 53rd meeting on May 29, 2007, the National Development Council (NDC) approved a resolution to launch a mission to boost the yearly output of rice, wheat, and pulses by 10 million tonnes, 8 million tonnes, and 2 million tonnes, respectively, by the conclusion of the Eleventh Plan (2011-12). As a result, in October 2007 the "National Food Security Mission" (NFSM), a centrally sponsored programme, was introduced.

Pulses are the focus of the National Food Security Mission's (NFSM) programme, which is being carried out in designated areas of 28 States and 2 Union Territories (UTs), namely Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. For other crops, however, the districts are chosen based on the district's production and cropped area in accordance with NFSM-approved standards.

Through the State Governments and Union Territories (UTs) under NFSM, aid is being offered to the farmers for the procurement of pump sets, water carrying pipelines, sprinkler sets, and mobile rain guns. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) is being implemented by the government with the goals of improving physical access to water, increasing the amount of land that can be cultivated with guaranteed irrigation, increasing the effectiveness of on-farm water use, introducing sustainable water conservation practises, etc.
