New Attorney General Of India Is Senior Advocate R Venkataramani

Senior advocate R Venkataramani has been appointed as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years. Venkataramani will replace KK Venugopal as the new Attorney General. The tenure of current Attorney General KK Venugopal ends on 30 September. He is 91 years old and on his third extension.

Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju’s office confirmed the appointment in a tweet. The tweet said, “The President has appointed R. Venkataramani, Senior Advocate to the post of Attorney General of India with effect from 1st October, 2022.”

Present Attorney General Venugopal had told the government that he would not be able to continue in the post after the end of his current term in view of his growing age. The Attorney General is the first law officer of the Government of India and has the right of hearing in all the courts of the country.

R Venkataramani has been appointed after Mukul Rohatgi rejected this offer on 25 September. Mukul Rohatgi was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017. After him, KK Venugopal was made the Attorney General. He was appointed to this post in July 2017.
