A 2021 NITI Aayog roadmap on ethanol blending has resurfaced amid the ongoing rollout of E20 fuel, highlighting concerns over the compatibility of existing vehicles with higher ethanol blends. The report noted that automobile manufacturers had suggested either continuing the supply of E10 fuel or ensuring that the entire vehicle fleet is upgraded before a complete transition to E20.

NITI Aayog’s old report raises concerns over E20
According to the roadmap, higher ethanol blending can help reduce India’s dependence on crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions and support the domestic biofuel industry. However, it also pointed out that older vehicles not designed for E20 fuel could face issues related to engine performance, fuel efficiency and the durability of certain components.
E20 fuel rollout and vehicle compatibility
The report emphasized the need for a phased transition, allowing consumers and manufacturers enough time to adapt. It also recommended clear fuel labelling, consumer awareness campaigns and wider availability of compatible vehicles before making E20 the standard fuel across the country.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) had also highlighted the importance of ensuring fuel availability in line with vehicle compatibility. Experts have said that while newer vehicles are increasingly being designed to run on E20 fuel, millions of older vehicles on Indian roads may require continued access to E10 during the transition period.
India has been steadily expanding its ethanol blending programme as part of its clean energy and energy security goals. The government has promoted E20 fuel to reduce fossil fuel consumption and support farmers through increased demand for ethanol produced from agricultural feedstock.
