After Nitish Kumar’s Shift, RJD to Face Big Challenge in Bihar Assembly

Investigate the political drama that is developing in Bihar as the BJP moves quickly to accuse the RJD after Nitish Kumar changed his partnership.

Nitish Kumar: Following Nitish Kumar’s party switch to the NDA alliance, a number of BJP leaders have sent a notice of no-confidence to the assembly secretary, requesting the removal of RJD leader and Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary.

No-Confidence Notice Issued by NDA Leaders

The notice to remove Awadh Bihari Choudhary was given by BJP leaders Nand Kishore Yadav and Tarkishore Prasad (former Deputy president Minister), HAM president and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, JD(U)’s Vinay Kumar Choudhary, Ratnesh Sada and other MLAs from the NDA alliance.

Nitish Kumar ended days of uncertainty on Sunday by severing his links with the Congress and the RJD, the parties that make up the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) government, and he took the oath of office as the NDA alliance’s chief minister for a record-breaking ninth time.

JD(U)’s Previous Breakup with BJP

The JD(U) leader severed ties with the BJP in August 2022, claiming it was attempting to “split” his party. At that time, he joined the Mahagathbandhan. The NDA now has 128 MLAs in Bihar, six more above the majority threshold, as a result of this outcome. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan, which consists of the Left, Congress, and RJD parties, has 114 MLAs.

With 79 MLAs, the RJD leads all parties in the 243-seat Bihar assembly. The BJP stands second with 78, JD(U) with 45, and Congress with 19. The HAM and AIMIM have four and one MLA each, whereas the Left parties have sixteen. In the House, there is also a single independent MLA.
