Amit Patkar, the head of the Goa Congress, claimed that the BJP in power was stoking rumours of Goa MLAs joining BJP

Amit Patkar, the president of the Congress’s Goa branch, claimed that the BJP, which is in power, was spreading these rumours in advance of the assembly’s two-week Budget Session, according to news agency PTI.

A party gathering on Sunday saw a lower-than-expected turnout as the Congress in Goa sought to deny rumours of a developing uprising despite reports of some leaders speaking with the ruling BJP the day before an assembly session.

“There are seven MLAs (at the meeting). I was merely in town for a polite meeting; I had not been summoned by high authority. There are numerous rumours (regarding MLAs defecting to the BJP); what should be done?”, Aleixo Sequeira, a Congress MLA, said to news agency ANI, “I can vouch for myself, but I can’t say for anyone else.

Goa Congress leader Michael Lobo refuted rumours that any party legislator would join the BJP in an interview with ANI.

“All of these are rumours. As such, nothing exists. A rumour must be propagated by someone or something when the assembly [session] begins. I haven’t been told; if I am, I will let you know first, he said.

Prior to the monsoon session of the assembly, which starts on Monday, the Congress party head, Amit Patkar had convened a party meeting with 11 MLAs on Saturday at a hotel in Panaji.

Since the BJP retook power in the state in May of this year, there has been talk that a few Congress MLAs in Goa may join the BJP.
