The INDIA block rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1, 2026, has been condemned by politicians, and has caused logistical and security nightmares to local traders. The rally, convened by the Congress and supported by opposition allies, would pile pressure on the government over the possibility of polling booth fraud and a flawed Special Intensive Revision of rolls (SIR).The Delhi Police have allowed the rally with condition on crowd control, surveillance, road arrangements and safety of the public. The BJP, meanwhile, has raised concerns over the timing of the rally.

Why Does the Rally Have So Many Conditions?

The rally is reported to be allowed to be held from 10 am to 5 pm, during which organisers are said to have to prevent the event from lasting the whole period and the participants from overnighting at the location. The conditions also mandated installation of HD CCTV cameras, provision of drinking water and toilet facilities, deployment of volunteers, adherence to instructions of traffic police regarding parking of vehicles, among others. Police also ordered not to march towards any destination outside Ramlila Maidan. These stipulations are meant to mitigate a sizable political assembly and trigger crowd-control and security issues.

Why Is BJP Questioning the Rally?

BJP’s objections against the rally are, first, the date of the rally, and second, the political agenda of the rally. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad has opposed the rally, saying the date of the rally – 1st November (anniversary of 1984 anti-Sikh riots) – was emotionally significant for the Sikh community and that some allied members of the ‘INDIA’ group of parties was not comfortable with that. The Congress, on the other hand, says the rally is to show up the so-called votal-list irregularities and safeguard voting rights. In the call for Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao rally, said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has asked students, farmers, workers, women, youth and traders to join.

Traders express fears of business upheaval

The business community in Delhi has also expressed its apprehensions about the rally, as the same is being held during a busy shopping time for the festival shopping season.  The Chamber of Trade and Industry has asked Rahul Gandhi to put off the event till after Diwali, cautioning that traffic diversions, barricades, and restrictions around central Delhi may impact markets nearby. It has requested a meeting with Gandhi to highlight these issues.

Security arrangements and crowd management

Delhi Police is ready for a massive turnout, with barricades, CCTV cameras, gates for entry and exit and emergency plans in place. The police estimates reported by Hindustan Times put the turnout at 40,000-50,000, while organizers have talked of a far higher figure.
