‘BJP VIP brats’: Congress claims BJP’s Tejasvi Surya opened emergency exit on IndiGo flight

BJP’s Tejashvi Surya reportedly unlocked the emergency door on an IndiGo flight last month, according to a claim made by the Congress on Tuesday.

The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aviation regulator, stated earlier today that a passenger on IndiGo 6E flight 6E-7339 from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli opened the emergency door, scaring the passengers. “The flight took off after pressurisation checks soon after. DGCA has ordered a probe into the matter,” it said.

Hours after this statement, Congress’ former media in-charge Randeep Surjewala in a tweet said: “The BJP VIP Brats! How dare the airline complain? Is it the norm for the BJP power elite? Did it compromise passenger safety? Ohhh! U can’t ask questions about BJP’s entitled VIPs.”

Surjewala also revealed a report claiming that Surya was the one who opened the door. According to the report, co-passengers reported Surya ‘accidentally’ pulled down the lever that closed the emergency exit, delaying the flight’s departure from 10.05 am by 142 minutes.

Surya, the sitting MP from Bangalore South, was joined by K Annamalai, the leader of the Tamil Nadu BJP. According to the report, Surya and Annamalai sat in the first row, on the right emergency escape seat.

The cabin crew gave them a special briefing meant for the emergency row. “After the briefing, they started talking to each other and in a quick moment, MP Tejasvi Surya placed his hand on the lever as if holding a gripping handle of a car and pulled it down,” a co-passenger told South First.

Both BJP leaders were requested to leave and wait inside the buses for more than 30 minutes following the incident, a DMK spokesperson told India Today.

The passenger unintentionally activated the emergency escape during the boarding process, according to a statement from IndiGo. The traveler instantly expressed regret for the behavior.

The airline said that the incident was logged following SOPs and that the aircraft completed necessary engineering tests, which caused a delay in the flight’s departure.
