A blame game has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress after a BJP worker and his 85-year-old mother were allegedly beaten by miscreants who entered her house in West Bengal's North 24 Parangas district in the wee hours of Saturday.
Speaking to India Today TV, Shova Majumdar, mother of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopal Majumdar alleged that her son was beaten up because he works for the BJP.
"My son has been beaten because he works for the BJP. Two people pushed me. My son has injuries on his head and hands. My own health is not good. I can neither talk nor sit properly. I have been beaten while I was bed-ridden," she said.
The BJP said the woman is the mother of Gopal Majumdar, a local party worker, who was attacked by TMC supporters. The woman, who lives with her son, was also assaulted, the BJP alleged and posted her photographs and videos on social media.
In the video, the woman could be heard telling a news channel that TMC supporters barged into her house around 4:30 am and assaulted her and her son. She also said that she could not identify the assaulters. "They told me not to disclose who did this," the eighty 82-year-old woman said.
Agnimitra Paul, president of the women’s front of the Bengal BJP, visited Majumdar on Monday afternoon and demanded that the alleged assaulters be arrested.
“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee claims to be the daughter of Bengal but there is no respect for a mother in her state,” said Paul.
The picture of brutal wounds suffered by Shova on her face was widely shared by shocked social media users.
The TMC dispensation meanwhile has denied its involvement in the attack and called it a family dispute.
The commission chief wrote to chief election commissioner Sunil Arora on 3 March.
